Lawmakers in the state of New York, USA have officially voted to legalise the adult-use of recreational cannabis, creating the second-biggest legal cannabis market in the country. After years of debate, New York will finally join 16 other states that have now fully legalised the drug.

Following amendments and hours of debate, the “Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act” was passed by the Assembly and the Senate late on Tuesday 30 March. It will now require approval from Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been vocal about his support for legalisation.

Lawmakers previously suspended efforts to legalise adult-use cannabis last year as the Covid-19 pandemic began to overwhelm services.

According to Politico, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, who sponsored the bill, commented:
