International personal care company Colgate-Palmolive has reportedly filed a patent for a CBD antiperspirant formula which it says can work as an anti-irritant on skin.

The company is expected to use the formation in a number of deodorant products, including roll-on, gel, stick, and aerosol products. The line of CBD products will be added to the company’s extensive range of personal care products which include toothpaste, haircare, and skincare.

In its international patent, Colgate-Palmolive revealed that it had designed the formula in response to increasing demand for anti-irritant antiperspirants. Many traditional antiperspirant products contain products such as aluminium and zirconium salts which can cause skin irritation.

According to Colgate-Palmolive’s patent filing, around 50% of the world’s population are considered to have sensitive skin, meaning that there is a clear need for alternatives.

The patent filing continued: “It is therefore desirable to develop and formulate efficacious anti-irritant ingredients into personal care products to mitigate potential irritant-induced redness, tingling, itching, or burning of the skin to a tolerable level for improved consumer compliance.”

There is mounting evidence to support the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of CBD, which Colgate-Palmolive claim makes it the ideal product to incorporate into their antiperspirant products.

Their patent filing states: “Without being bound by theory, it is believed that cannabinoids such as CBD, with its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, are well-suited to mitigate skin irritation, such as that resulting from application of a deodorant or an antiperspirant.”

According to the personal care company, the addition of CBD has “a surprising reduction of the irritation and inflammation” caused by conventional antiperspirants.

The company reports that its CBD formula could be used in other products in the future, including hand soap, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner.

In addition, Colgate-Palmolive last year acquired ownership over CBD oral care company – Hello Products.

CBD is the second most common cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. In recent years, the ingredient has been added to a huge variety of products thanks to its abundance of potential health and wellness properties.
