MUHU – the UK’s first flavoured CBD-infused gin has officially launched this week. The sweet hibiscus gin is the first from the start-up company, with more set to follow.
It took a series of trial mixes until the founder of MUHU, Sally Wynter, was happy with the hibiscus flavoured gin. The company will aim to market it’s products at millennials, creating innovative concoctions with trending ingredients. CBD is the first phase of this plan.
Wynter intends for MUHU to fill a gap in the gin market, to “branch away from the traditional, provenance-driven brands.” CBD beverages are becoming more common in the UK, as the Cannabis-derivative gains popularity. However, few have focused their aim on infusing the ingredient into spirits.
MUHU Founder, Sally Wynters, said:
“I looked at the spirits market and despite gin acting as a catalyst for experimentation with flavours and colour, we haven’t seen anything truly innovative.”
Earlier this year, craft spirit makers, Top Beverages, released a luxury CBD-infused rum and gin. British rum company, Dead Man’s Fingers, also released a hemp-infused rum. However, MUHU is unique in the market due to its target audience and the cost of the product.
The gin is made using a colourless and flavourless water-soluble CBD solution, sourced from Canada. In a recent press release, MUHU explained that the CBD is extracted from pesticide and chemical-free hemp.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most prevalent, non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the Cannabis plant. In recent years, the ingredient has gained a reputation for having potential medicinal and therapeutic properties.
An increasing number of people around the world use CBD to soothe anxiety, pain, and other conditions. Sally Wynters has also used the Cannabis ingredient to ease anxiety, and relieve hangovers: “personally, I feel more relaxed mentally but also in my body and muscles.”
The hibiscus gin is expected to go on sale next month and will retail at £34.99 for a 50cl bottle.
